49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel wouldn’t be the first person to quietly cuss out his boss, but he actually did this to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Admit it, you’ve worked for a boss whom you didn’t like much at all. Or, perhaps you did, but there were times when you couldn’t stand that person’s antics or orders.

So, what do you do? You quietly cuss them out under your breath, right?

Enter San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

Granted, Samuel has a great working relationship with his boss, head coach Kyle Shanahan. That relationship helped calm the waters back when the All-Pro receiver was seeking out a hefty contract extension last offseason but got muddled down in trade requests instead.

It wasn’t always that way, though.

49ers WR Deebo Samuel talks about quietly ‘cussing out’ Kyle Shanahan in 2019

Speaking to The Ringer’s Kevin Clark from Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona, Samuel talked about having some challenges with Shanahan back during his rookie-year 2019 campaign.

“My rookie year was rough,” Samuel pointed out. “My rookie year was real. I used to go to practice with dark shields on my helmet just so he couldn’t see my eyes because I was cussing him out in my helmet.”

Admit it, you’ve probably done the same thing with your boss.

However, Samuel also pointed out the facts that originally led to him being frustrated with Shanahan.

“Detail, like, how important it is,” Samuel added about Shanahan. “There’ll be a lot of mess-ups in games that people don’t know anything about. It’s just small things that will lose you the game. Kyle is really huge on details, being decisive, breaking the huddle right and hearing everything.”

Hopefully, Shanahan didn’t hear Samuel swearing behind his back, though.

At any rate, the two’s relationship has improved to the point where they spend time talking about things other than football, a statement both Samuel and Shanahan have made since that awkward contractual standoff early in 2022.

Emmanuel Sanders says it’d be ‘really crazy’ for 49ers to fire Kyle Shanahan

It’s always fair to criticize a head coach or coordinator and hope that person improves. However, despite Shanahan playing a significant role in turning what was a two-win Niners squad from 2016 around and into a team that’s made three of the last four NFC Championship games, it’s somewhat crazy to think there are opinions that support his being fired.

And yet those opinions are out there.

Former San Francisco wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl at the end of the 2019 season, shared his thoughts on the subject with KNBR 680’s Murph & Mac Show from Radio Row.

Sanders thinks it’d be insane for the Niners to do such a thing with Shanahan.

“Are you crazy? Are you really crazy? I would never let Kyle Shanahan go,” Sanders responded. “I’ve been in five different organizations, Kyle Shanahan will be a Hall of Fame coach. He was born to do this.”

Samuel might echo those sentiments, too, especially considering Shanahan’s offense helped turn him into an All-Pro and one of the most versatile players in the NFL today.

Although it’s unknown whether or not Sanders ever joined Samuel in cussing out Shanahan behind the head coach’s back.
