49ers NFL trade deadline need No. 2: Interior offensive line

In theory, San Francisco could do with some reinforcements along the entire offensive line and not just the interior, as All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams remains banged up with an ankle sprain and right tackle Mike McGlinchey is dealing with a calf problem.

Surprisingly, the 49ers’ two guards, Aaron Banks and Spencer Burford, have held their own this season, but center Jake Brendel is something of a liability.

Forgivable, considering he had only three regular-season starts dating back to 2016 before being named the starter this year. But that only serves to illustrate the point that the Niners need to find an upgrade.

There don’t appear to be too many centers on the trade block leading up to the deadline, however, it’s possible John Lynch looks to take advantage of the Carolina Panthers’ apparent fire sale in the wake of firing head coach Matt Rhule, possibly eyeing someone like offensive lineman Austin Corbett, who offers flexibility at both guard and center.

Corbett, who also spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, is familiar with the kind of offense San Francisco runs.
