No. 1: 49ers quarterback Trey Lance

Trey Lance is winning the QB1 battle by default, both by the fact San Francisco invested so heavily in drafting him a year ago and in light of veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo being unable to throw until training camp because of offseason shoulder surgery.

Whether or not Garoppolo remains on the roster into the regular season remains up in the air, but the 49ers are fully implementing Lance into a starter’s role this season.

There’s no mistaking that, as the Sacramento Bee’s Chris Biderman pointed out:

"Everything else coach Kyle Shanahan and the players say indicates the team is moving ahead with Trey Lance as its starting quarterback. Shanahan doesn’t consider the quarterback situation fluid, meaning what he said at the owner’s meetings in March about the expectations surrounding Lance remain true. He expects Lance to be the starting quarterback. It’s the same for the belief that Garoppolo will be traded at some point before his $24.2 million base salary is guaranteed at the start of the regular season in September."

Shanahan is going to be tweaking the offense, too, taking full advantage of Lance’s skill set and abilities, especially the athletic nature of the young quarterback’s game.

So, if you were thinking Garoppolo could somehow come back from his injury and revert back to being a starter, it’s not likely.

Lance would have to completely flame out for that to happen between now and Week 1.
