The 49ers may be forced to trade Deebo Samuel this offseason, while the Giants may be looking to offload Kadarius Toney, too.

The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in quite the conundrum this offseason.

However it happened, they’re facing the reality of having to move All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel between now and Week 1, perhaps in light of Samuel’s standoff with the team surrounding a desire to cash in on what should be a lucrative contract extension.

The 2019 second-round NFL Draft pick has since requested a trade. And while the Niners would be wise to do whatever they can to ensure Samuel sticks around and is happy, there is the real possibility the relationship is damaged beyond repair.

On the other side of the country, it looks as if the relationship between the New York Giants and their first-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, wide receiver Kadarius Toney, isn’t exactly blossoming either.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported Toney “could be available in a trade” this offseason in light of a lackluster rookie campaign that saw the University of Florida product manage 39 receptions for 420 yards last season.

Would 49ers entertain trading Deebo Samuel for Kadarius Toney?

Again, trading Samuel isn’t exactly at the top of San Francisco’s wish list. It’d be a last-resort option, and the team would surely want to squeeze whatever it could get out of any acquiring team.

The G-Men do have five selections within the top 100 picks of this year’s NFL Draft, including Nos. 5 and 7 overall, but including Toney as part of a package deal would likely mean the 49ers acquiring lesser-value picks in a would-be Samuel trade.

There are concerns about Toney’s overall commitment to the Giants, and football in general, which wouldn’t exactly produce a top-end option from the Niners’ vantage point.

Although switching from a restructuring program in New York to a Super Bowl-caliber one in San Francisco could make a difference.

49ers would lose a Deebo Samuel trade to Giants for Kadarius Toney

Unless the 49ers somehow got their hands on one of those top-10 picks the G-Men own, sending Samuel off for Toney would surely be much bigger a New York win than a victory for the Niners.

Sure, Toney has just one year of experience at the NFL level, and it even took Samuel half a season to finally find his footing back in 2019. Perhaps Toney is just taking a little longer to make his bona fide arrival in the league.

Still, Samuel is a proven star and an all-encompassing offensive weapon, whereas Toney is anything but at this point.

Should any trade between the two teams go down, the Giants would walk away as the biggest victors, while San Francisco would be grasping at ways to make up for Samuel’s loss.

For now, such a move has to be considered nothing more than a possible contingency plan, a last-ditch effort from the 49ers’ perspective if no other options are available.
