In an exclusive with FanSided, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo eluded to the idea of liking a “package deal” trade with Deebo Samuel in 2022.

The San Francisco 49ers have had two players at the forefront of the news cycle this offseason: wide receiver Deebo Samuel and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Ever since the Niners were eliminated in the playoffs by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game, the overwhelming theory was San Francisco would trade Garoppolo in what was supposed to be a weak market for quarterback-needy teams.

While there was a flurry of movement, Garoppolo stayed put. The 49ers couldn’t find a trade partner.

However, Samuel’s recent trade request in light of contract-extension disputes and his own role within the offense has suddenly made Garoppolo’s news head to the back burner, and now it’s Samuel who’s dominating Niners-related headlines.

Not surprisingly, Samuel’s future is something Garoppolo is thinking about right now.

Jimmy Garoppolo tells FanSided he’d be open to a ‘trade package’ with Deebo Samuel

Garoppolo, joined by father Tony Garoppolo, sat down with FanSided’s own, Mark Carman, of the Stacking the Box Podcast to chat about his recent shoulder surgery and some speculation about his own future.

As far as Samuel, Garoppolo naturally had nothing but great things to say:

"He does everything. He does the on-the-field stuff that everyone sees, obviously. It’s tremendous, and there’s not many guys that can do that. But what he does in the locker room and what he does in the meeting room, just setting the tone for people and holding guys accountable. I’ve seen him take younger receivers under his wing and teach them a few tricks. It’s just things like that going a long way, and that’s why I think that guy deserves every dollar he’s going to get."

However, the proverbial elephant in the room is the wonder where both players will play next year. San Francisco has already tried trading Garoppolo but couldn’t. It won’t want to trade Samuel outright, but both he and the 49ers may reach an impasse where a trade is the last remaining option.

Is there a scenario where the Niners look to trade both Samuel and Garoppolo this offseason?

Jimmy G admitted he didn’t think of that but would certainly be open to it:

“I would do that in a heartbeat,” Garoppolo responded when asked if a package deal to continue playing with Samuel was feasible. “Those things will take care of themselves, but I didn’t even think about that idea. That’s not bad.”

At any rate, that’d be a discussion for San Francisco’s brass and those teams absolutely wanting Samuel but potentially open to onboarding Garoppolo, too.

Either way, don’t expect this storyline to go away anytime soon.
