49ers Target No. 1: CB Derek Stingley, LSU

If the 49ers do find themselves with No. 11, one of the big benefits they’ll have is a rich vein of cornerbacks who could be selected in the first round. Derek Stingley would be the best-case scenario for the Niners, as he has real lockdown-corner potential for the NFL.

Stingley became a starting cornerback for the LSU Tigers as a freshman and was a revelation for them, shutting down one side of the field constantly and making plays on the ball on the rare occasions a quarterback was stupid enough to throw it in his direction.

Stingley would end up with six intercepts and 15 passes defended in that exceptionally impressive freshman season.

After a COVID-interrupted sophomore year, Stingley suffered a blow in his junior season suffering a foot injury. He underwent surgery to correct the injury and then entered the NFL Draft.

Stingley looks like a generational talent at cornerback. He’s a good size at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds and has exceptional speed and athleticism.

His versatility also pops out. He can play in a man- or a zone-based coverage system, he’s an excellent run defender and his ball skills are exceptional.

Stingley would normally be a lock for a pick in the top 10, but his foot injury, as well as an excellent class of edge rushers (a position that carries much more value with teams), could see him slide down the pecking order.

If he fell to No. 11, San Francisco would snap him up immediately.
