5 prospects 49ers target if Commanders trade No. 11 draft pick for Jimmy Garoppolo
With rumors flying the Commanders could trade the No. 11 NFL Draft pick to the 49ers for Jimmy Garoppolo, who could the Niners now target?
With the offseason officially beginning after the conclusion of the Super Bowl, one of the biggest stories every year is the quarterback carousel and where every quarterback in the NFL Draft and free agency will end up.
While the San Francisco 49ers will not be buyers in the quarterback market beyond signing a backup for new starter Trey Lance, they will be a seller with Jimmy Garoppolo openly on the trade block.
The timing is opportune as well for the Niners with such a weak quarterback market. Garoppolo is seen as a perfectly functional starting quarterback despite his flaws, and there isn’t a lot of options for teams seeking an upgrade.
Sure, there are the trade rumors swirling around players such as the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers, the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson and the Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray, but there’s no guarantee those players will be leaving and they’ll be demanding a ransom in return if they do.
Prevailing logic suggested San Francisco would be able to recoup a second-round pick and perhaps a player for Garoppolo, but the weak market (and a draft class where every quarterback holds some big flaws) may cause a team to overpay given the importance of the position.
One team that’s been cited as such is the newly minted Washington Commanders, who are seeking an upgrade at quarterback. They have a talented roster, and it has been suggested the Commanders could “justify” sending the No. 11 pick to San Francisco.
Obviously, this would be the absolute high-water mark as far as any trade could go. It seems ludicrous a team could be so desperate to take Garoppolo for so high a price, but that’s just how important a quarterback is.
If the 49ers could get back a first-round pick after the 2021 trade for Lance, that would be a dream come true.
But if such a trade did come about, who could the Niners consider at No. 11 overall?
Niner Noise breaks down five targets that make a ton of sense if they did manage to luck into that draft pick.
