49ers Target No. 2: CB Trent McDuffie, Washington

Another cornerback who could find themselves picked inside the top 10 come draft day, Trent McDuffie is one of a few risers who could be challenging Derek Stingley to be the first cornerback taken.

McDuffie isn’t quite as tall as Stingley at 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, but he’s shone for the Washington Huskies in an impressive junior season that has him moving up draft boards.

McDuffie is rocketing up draft boards for one reason and that’s his coverage skills and versatility. He’s good in any sort of defensive scheme, being able to play in both a man and a zone system and having the ability to play inside or outside.

Don’t let his relative lack of height deceive you into thinking he’s only a slot cornerback. He has the speed and athleticism to match receivers and the ball skills to back it up. He may only have two interceptions in his collegiate career, but the stats don’t do his skills justice.

He has some additional traits the 49ers will like. He’s a willing tackler who gets his hands dirty and he helps out in run defense, and his speed means he could also fill in as a punt or kick returner. Special teams is a desperate need for the Niners in the offseason.

McDuffie rates behind Stingley based on Stingley’s generational physical abilities, but the former would make an excellent consolation prize.
