49ers Loser: Kicker Robbie Gould

In some regard, kicker Robbie Gould played a vital role in ensuring the 49ers came away with the victory in Week 14, making both of his extra points on a cold night when the Bengals were struggling with the kicking game. And given the final outcome, any additional misses from Gould would have been disastrous.

All said, a 2-of-3 mark on field-goal tries isn’t great anyway. But it’s the nature of that lone miss that’s concerning.

Gould had the chance to connect for what would have been a game-winning 47-yard field goal with time expiring. The Niners frantically got into Gould’s comfort range of within 50 yards to make the kick, one you’d figure a specialist making $2.6 million this season would be able to convert.

Except he didn’t, and San Francisco had to go to overtime and endure more desperation.

Gould is making 81.3 percent of his field-goal tries this season, 23rd out of qualifiers.

Hard to justify his contract at that mark.
