No. 3: 49ers RB Jeff Wilson

This may be less of a shock following the news that 49ers running back Jeff Wilson will presumably be out for a large part of the 2021 season, but with how well Wilson has played throughout his years with the team, it would still undoubtedly rattle some fans to see the Niners brass cut ties with Wilson.

Wilson has been very productive in his limited reps with San Francisco, and many were expecting him to take on an even larger role as the team’s No. 2 back for the upcoming season with the departures of Tevin Coleman and Jerrick McKinnon in free agency.

This may no longer be the case, though, as his injury will be sure to land him on the PUP list. Couple his injury with the fact the 49ers went out and drafted two young running backs, Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell, in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson’s days in San Francisco may be numbered.

Even with all these factors working against Wilson, it would still be kind of shocking to see the Niners cut Wilson before they get to see if he’s able to get back in shape following his eventual recovery from his injury.

If there’s not going to be any room for him, Wilson could wind up being let go with an injury settlement.
