Round 7, Pick No. 230 Overall (from Jets): 49ers select wide receiver Dax Milne, BYU

The Niners aren’t probably going to have a shot at BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with him penciled in at No. 2 overall to the New York Jets, leading to the selection of Justin Fields.

But San Francisco could still explore landing Wilson’s favorite target last year, wide receiver Dax Milne.

More from Niner Noise

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Milne already met virtually with the 49ers, so there’s already some interest there. Although if that was to merely gauge Wilson or to see Milne’s potential fit with the Niners moving forward is anyone’s guess.

Either way, Milne enjoyed a highly productive 2020 campaign with 70 receptions for 1,188 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, also doubling as a rushing threat with 11 carries for 67 yards, suggesting he could be another dual-threat weapon for Kyle Shanahan’s “positionless” offense.

Milne might not be overly fast or shifty, but he has a good enough route tree to suggest he could be productive as a backup slot receiver, and the 49ers still have room for one of those even after adding Tylan Wallace earlier in this mock. Plus, adding to Milne’s attractiveness, he has served as a return specialist on occasion, and getting him in the mix on special teams would be one way to maximize this late-round flier selection.

The 2021 NFL Draft kicks off on April 29. And hopefully, by the end of that day, Niners fans will be looking at Fields in the red and gold.
