49ers Round 5 Pick, No. 172 Overall: Safety Jacoby Stevens, LSU

Another position the 49ers are expected to continue to build depth at is safety. So, the Niners grab another player from the LSU national-championship defensive backfield in Jacoby Stevens.

Stevens had his NFL Draft stock drop due to concerns about his speed and acceleration, however, he played at an incredibly high level at LSU and proved he can compete with the best of the best in the college game. If concerns about his speed do lead to him falling to this round, San Francisco would be smart to grab him in the hopes the on-field production he had in college can continue.

Safety is another position the 49ers have struggled to keep depth at recently, and so bringing in a rookie makes sense, especially one with as much upside as Stevens could bring in the fifth round.

This pick would allow the Niners to grab a smart, versatile safety who has elite upside. San Francisco made having a dominant defense a core part of the teambuilding strategy, and although the team’s defensive line often gets the most hype, keeping up a strong defensive backfield is important as well.

Stevens would help do that.
