No. 1: Colts are biggest threat to 49ers for Trent Williams’ services

Unlike both the Chiefs and the Bears, the Indianapolis Colts don’t have an issue with cap space.

At the close of March 15, per Over the Cap, Indy had $45.9 million in cap space — fourth most in the league. Simply put, if it came down to a bidding war between the 49ers and Colts, the latter would win hands down.

Granted, Indianapolis might not be quite as close to the playoffs, at least not with quarterback Carson Wentz under center. Yet the entire roster on both sides of the ball is solid enough, and one has to think Trent Williams would enjoy playing alongside one of the best guards in the league, Quenton Nelson.

Indianapolis is also looking to fill the void left by now-retired left tackle Anthony Castonzo, and Williams would easily be an upgrade over what Castonzo’s impressive career showcased.

And if the Colts wanted to offer up big money right away to Williams, something the 49ers, Chiefs and Bears likely wouldn’t be able to do, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Williams sign a massive deal worth well more than the $20 million the Niners are reportedly willing to pay on an annual basis.

All the while leaving a glaring hole on the left side of San Francisco’s offensive line.

Hopefully Williams prefers to stay within a system tailored to his strengths while working under head coach Kyle Shanahan for a few more years.

If it doesn’t happen, though, the Colts could be the team to watch as a possible destination.
