John Lynch’s non-moves at the NFL trade deadline

There weren’t too many other blockbuster deals leading up to the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday. The Seattle Seahawks acquired former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Carlos Dunlap, and the Niners surely could have used some additional defensive line help.

But Dunlap would have been too expensive for San Francisco, considering its cap situation halfway through the season.

Likewise, the Tennessee Titans acquiring cornerback Desmond King from the Los Angeles Chargers would have been a move likely beyond the SF 49ers’ comfort zone, too.

One can fairly look at the Niners’ lack of movement on other high-profile pending free agents, such as safety Jaquiski Tartt or perhaps even left tackle Trent Williams, as a mark against John Lynch. Yet both players potentially departing via free agency next year could net San Francisco compensatory draft picks in 2022. So if any would-be deals didn’t net the desired compensation in return, it’s surely OK for Lynch and Co. to stand pat with what they have.

Still, it might have been nicer for the 49ers to clear some of the players not seen as part of the team’s future beyond this season, netting something of value in return, even if any trade package would have been below market value.

Nothing particularly good or bad regarding the other non-moves from San Francisco leading up to the deadline’s passing on Nov. 3.
