5 SF 49ers players to watch in Week 1 vs. Cardinals
By Timmy Gibson
No. 5: SF 49ers Offensive Tackle Trent Williams
The final player on this list is another offseason acquisition for the 49ers, offensive tackle Trent Williams. The 49ers acquired Williams in a trade from the Washington Football Team after future Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Staley retired.
At first, Staley’s seem like huge shoes to fill. But, Williams seems to be the perfect man to fill them.

Williams is widely considered one of the league’s best tackles, although he did sit out all of the 2019 season after some disputes with Washington’s medical staff. Along with being one of the most feared and respected tackles in the league, Williams also has experience with Kyle Shanahan, as they worked together when Shanahan was on the Washington coaching staff.
So, it seems like Williams is perfectly ready to take over for Staley without the Niners offensive line missing a beat.
However, despite Williams’ ability, it has been over a year since he last played in an NFL game. With no preseason, there may be rust he has yet to knock off. Although the word from training camp is that Williams has looked every bit himself, it is hard to know how he will look during an NFL game until he plays in an NFL game.
For that reason, Williams is a must-watch player this Sunday, both to watch the SF 49ers’ new stud left tackle and to make sure he is playing at the elite level he is capable of.
Obviously the most important thing to watch this Sunday is the 49ers’ team as a whole. It’s been a long offseason, and this Sunday will be a great day as we welcome in the new NFL season.
But if you’re looking for something specific to keep an eye on, Jerrrick McKinnon, Jordan Reed, Javon Kinlaw, Solomon Thomas, and Trent Williams are all players to watch to see if they live up to the training camp hype.
