No. 2: SF 49ers Defensive Tackle D.J. Jones

In 2019 defensive tackle D.J. Jones was a supporting cast member on the defensive line. Most people that play alongside players like defensive tackle DeForest Buckner would be looped into that category though.

Now though with the departure of Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts via an offseason trade, there is a void for someone on the 49ers to step up on the interior of the line.

The edge rushers Bosa and Dee Ford already have established themselves and already command the attention of opposing offensive lines, but who will man the inside?

Rookie defensive tackle and first-round pick Javon Kinlaw was supposed to be the logical replacement for Buckner. But his notoriety will surely command double teams from opposing offensive lines. Therefore, with extra attention to Bosa, Ford and Kinlaw, Jones will have a chance to show what he’s got.

In a recent press conference, when asked about the work he’s put in in the offseason to improve his pass-rushing game, Jones stated “I put an emphasis on not stopping my feet.” With that piece of advice that came from defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, Jones also mentioned he has “seen it transition onto the field.”

In the 11 games he started in 2019 before getting injured, Jones had 23 total tackles and two sacks (both career highs). The former 2017 sixth-round pick should have a chance to really up those numbers and be the dark horse breakout candidate.

Fans should expect big things from a healthy Jones in 2020.
