Stanford cornerback Paulson Adebo, however, might not need an extra season at the collegiate level to prove his worth as a first-round draft pick.
First, there’s the college connection with John Lynch’s alma mater, and that shouldn’t go unnoticed. And additionally, Adebo’s lanky 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame seems tailor-made for the 49ers’ traditional Cover 3 boundary cornerbacks. But what’s been lacking from the majority of the Niners corners over the years has been the ballhawk mentality.
With four interceptions in each of the last two seasons. Adebo checks off that box, too.
Adebo is known more for being a zone-type corner, and that’s also something intriguing enough to San Francisco despite coordinator Robert Saleh implementing a bit more man coverage last season.
Still, considering all the potential losses the 49ers could see within their secondary next season, using a first-round pick on a possible long-term starting option at boundary corner would be a wise move.
