No. 1: 49ers Wide Receiver Shawn Poindexter

He’s probably a long shot to make San Francisco’s 53-man roster. But second-year wide receiver Shawn Poindexter should at least be a player worth discussing during training camp and heading towards the regular season.

More from SF 49ers News

Poindexter, who amassed an impressive 759 yards on 42 receptions with 11 touchdowns his senior season at Arizona, suffered a torn ACL when the 49ers visited the Denver Broncos in the preseason last year. It was quite unfortunate, as Poindexter’s imposing 6-foot-5 frame could have translated into a viable red-zone target — an area in which Kyle Shanahan’s offense has historically struggled.

The Niners have two other big-bodied wideouts, Jalen Hurd and Jauan Jennings, the former coming off a serious back injury last year and the latter being a rookie. And while San Francisco has much more invested in Hurd and Jennings, Poindexter’s potential bounce-back campaign is certainly worth monitoring.

Some additional problems the 49ers face at wide receiver, namely depth, could work into Poindexter’s favor. Especially if he winds up serving as a better red-zone threat during camp.

Either way, he should receive a bit more attention between now and Week 1.
