5 players 49ers should let walk in 2021 NFL free agency

No. 1: 49ers Offensive Tackle Trent Williams
NFL free agency is often defined by the proverbial “let’s see what happens” cliche. And in the case of six-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Trent Williams, it’s certainly true.

Williams sat out his 2019 campaign with the Washington Redskins before the Niners plucked him away for two mid-round draft picks in order to replace now-retired tackle Joe Staley. It was essentially an emergency move, yet the fact Williams is an upgrade over one of San Francisco’s most favorite players prompts the idea the 49ers could re-sign Williams once his current contract expires in 2021.
The problem, though, is Williams’ current market value is $15.4 million, according to Spotrac, which isn’t cheap at all.
Given the Niners’ fiscal commitments and needs elsewhere, it’s easily a tough situation to understand why keeping Williams around beyond this upcoming season will be a tough challenge.
There is hope, though, especially considering the 2021 NFL Draft class is particularly deep, including a lot of high-quality options to be had on day two of the draft.
It shouldn’t be shocking if San Francisco passes on Williams, then elects to go the younger and cheaper route next spring.
