Ross Reynolds could compete for the right guard role for the 49ers.

For the San Francisco 49ers‘ 2020 training camp, the biggest spot up for grabs is the right guard position that was vacated by the released Mike Person.

Daniel Brunskill is the preseason favorite to get the starting role there, but it isn’t a given that he will be the starter.

Similarly, rookie Colton McKivitz, drafted as a fifth-rounder will get a chance but he may not grab the bull by the horns and challenge to be a starter given he has to move from the tackle position he played at West Virginia.

Tom Compton is on the roster, but he’s on a cheap deal and the team has no real reason to keep him if other players perform better than he does in training camp and preseason.

Last year, Niner Noise was a fan of Ross Reynolds and predicted him to stick around. He didn’t see any action for the 49ers despite their offensive line having an extensive injury crisis for a lot of the season, but he did still find himself on the practice squad roster nonetheless.

For training camp this year, Reynolds has a big chance to jump up the depth chart. Injuries happen all the time, especially considering the physicality of the trenches, and Reynolds could find himself in an identical situation that led Brunskill from a camp nobody to a trusted spot starter to a presumptive starter this year.

Reynolds has work to do with his pass protection, but his run blocking is adequate enough that he can start in games. He needs to work on his footwork, but his work in minicamp last year showed that he has potential.

The 49ers have very thin depth on the offensive line, the opportunity is there for Reynolds to make a splash in training camp and find himself as a primary backup and spot starter for the team. If not a starter in his own right.

Reynolds is not a well-known name among 49ers fans, but they should keep an eye on him. He has a real shot to announce himself as a big part of the roster if he performs strongly in the preseason.
