No. 1: Running Back Jeff Wilson

The 49ers didn’t use him a bunch in 2019. But when they did, running back Jeff Wilson made a difference. Particularly with his game-winning touchdown in Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Still, Wilson was back and forth between the active and inactive game-day roster throughout the season. And while San Francisco cleared up the running back depth chart by trading away Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins during the NFL Draft, it’s still a crowded group.

The Niners brought with them fellow runners Raheem Mostert, Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman alongside Wilson, then adding two undrafted free agents, Salvon Ahmed and JaMycal Hasty after the draft.

Ahmed and Hasty could be the next editions of hidden gems found and developed by Kyle Shanahan and running backs coach Bobby Turner.

And either could easily push Wilson, another undrafted find, off San Francisco’s radar.

It would be a tough choice to make, as Wilson has done enough to prove he belongs within the NFL ranks. But if Shanahan prioritizes players like Coleman, Mostert, Ahmed and Hasty, let alone McKinnon, there simply won’t be room for a player like Wilson on the roster.
