No. 2: Offensive Tackle Shon Coleman

The 49ers sorely missed veteran swing tackle Shon Coleman in 2019, losing him to a season-ending ankle injury in Week 1 of the preseason.

That injury didn’t help matters when the Niners also lost Joe Staley and right tackle Mike McGlinchey for extended periods of time during the regular season. But at least Coleman’s absence opened up the door for San Francisco to test out its 2019 rookie, Justin Skule, as well as the backup lineman, Daniel Brunskill.

Brunskill could be a favorite to secure the starting right guard position in 2020, but Skule and Colton McKivitz could end up being the primary backups for the offensive ends this season. McKivitz played tackle in college. And while he likely projects to be an interior lineman at the pro level, his ability to double as a tackle adds to his versatility.

Coleman, meanwhile, was brought back on a one-year deal and would cost the Niners just $137,500 in dead money if cut, according to Over the Cap. Considering both Skule and McKivitz are younger options not coming off serious injury, there’s an excellent chance Coleman ends up getting removed from the roster by Week 1.
