RB Longshots

Jeff Wilson Jr., Salvon Ahmed

I know many 49ers fans have a fond appreciation for Jeff Wilson. A preseason darling who wasn’t very efficient during the regular season but scored touchdowns whenever he got the ball, Wilson offers a more physical style of running the Niners don’t have on their roster.

However, the 49ers have repeatedly shown they value Wilson as a situational player only necessary to fill in if there’s an injury. And although he only got limited action, there wasn’t enough of a spark to justify keeping him over a player like Raheem Mostert or Tevin Coleman.

The distance between a weak bubble player and a longshot isn’t very high, and there is certainly a world where Wilson makes the roster. But I think it’s not a likely scenario. What’s more likely is the 49ers try to stash Wilson on the practice squad and take advantage of the new CBA rules to bring him during game day when the opponent calls for a player like him.

The other undrafted free agent of note, Salvon Ahmed, just isn’t as explosive as JaMycal Hasty is. For that reason, he has a much harder chance to make the roster. His vision is also questionable. He is a true longshot to make the roster, where it would either take an awe-inspiring preseason performance or a slew of injuries before he could be in consideration.
