Kyle Shanahan has a tendency for finding and developing late-round or undrafted free-agent running backs. Perhaps the 49ers’ best two examples are Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert, the latter being developed into an offensive star after Shanahan inherited him from the previous regime back in 2017.

Yet San Francisco’s running back situation isn’t as clear as it would seem heading into 2020. Breida was seldom used in the latter half and into the playoffs, and fellow running back Tevin Coleman could ultimately be a cap casualty this offseason, generating nearly $5 million in cap space with zero in dead money.

Running back Jerick McKinnon has spent the last two years on injured reserve after suffering an ACL tear following the 2018 preseason.

So, to round out the Niners’ 2020 NFL Draft class, Shanahan targets a less-heralded running back out of Baylor, JaMycal Hasty.

Hasty is a versatile pass-catching back ideal for a zone-style offense, and his ability to make things happen in space would seem to translate well into what Shanahan wants to do. And while Hasty’s 4.55 40-yard dash time doesn’t check the box for a Shanahan-preferred speed element, the running back’s pass protection and durability are traits the 49ers could use to bolster a position possessing more questions than one might think heading into the offseason.
