Stock down: Dante Pettis

It was a tough day at the office for wide receiver Dante Pettis, and it seemed like head coach Kyle Shanahan was getting fed up with it all.

Pettis muffed a punt during his chance to return the ball, and was less than impressive with the starters in the first half. He looked almost lethargic and struggled to make an impact.

Shanahan saw enough. And when the starters sat the second half, Pettis was kept on the field.

Significantly, fellow potential starter Deebo Samuel was not.

To his credit, Pettis played well with the reserves and also drew a pass interference flag downfield, but the message was delivered by that stage.

Is Pettis still the starter? I probably wouldn’t both reading too much into this, but it was a reality check for the young receiver.

On the plus side for Pettis, Jimmy Garoppolo targeted him on 25 percent of his passes with five targets from Garoppolo’s 20 passes. Whether or not Pettis sees the field time on Thursday against Los Angeles could be a pretty big indicator how Shanahan feels about him heading towards Week 1.
