No. 1: What the 49ers Get from Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

It’s the proverbial “elephant in the room,” but there’s clearly going to be a lot of attention and pressure on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this season.

Case in point, Garoppolo’s five consecutive interceptions tossed in a recent 49ers practice caught national attention, and those certainly didn’t help his critics sway their opinions on what his future holds as San Francisco’s franchise guy.

On the positive side of things, Garoppolo has had some bounce-back performances since then, and no quarterback goes through camp sessions without some bad moments.

Still, Garoppolo has yet to live up to what was then a record-setting five-year, $137.5 million deal dished out in 2018. It’s unfair to criticize him for the Week 3 ACL tear he suffered back in 2018, of course. But his efforts the first three games of last year weren’t particularly great, and certainly they didn’t reflect the kind of performances he had to close out 2017.

There will be far fewer excuses in 2019. The Niners spent considerable effort adding additional weapons to the offense this season, and Garoppolo has a full year immersed in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

It’s possible Garoppolo winds up thriving in this context, much like Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan did under Shanahan back in 2016.

Yet it remains an unknown, nevertheless, meaning Garoppolo’s field time over the next two preseason games will be worth paying close attention to.
