The 49ers used their second of three sixth-round draft picks on offensive tackle Justin Skule. Skule is a versatile exterior offensive lineman with experience at both left and right tackle.

Skule will be in competition for San Francisco’s swing-tackle spot in 2019. In February, the 49ers released their previous swing tackle Garry Gilliam after two underwhelming seasons.

Skule was expected to be a seventh-round selection if he went drafted at all. However, the 49ers apparently saw something in the 6-foot-7 tackle, which led them to pull the trigger on Skule with pick No. 183 in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Don’t expect Skule to take over for 49ers left tackle after this season, but he could be in the mix as a backup going forward. If Skule is unable to make the Niners’ final roster in 2019, he could find a role as a developmental role on San Francisco’s practice squad.
