Well, this was a bit of a shock.

In 2015, the 49ers reached for the first specialist, grabbing former Clemson punter Bradley Pinion in Round 5 of that year’s NFL Draft.

This year, the Niners make the move in the fourth round, grabbing Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky at No. 110 overall after trading down from the 104th overall selection in a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

That trade netted San Francisco two additional sixth-round picks, and that saves this selection from being an absolute waste.

At least to a point.

Wishnowsky, per all accounts, has a good leg. And the Niners needed to replace Pinion after he left through free agency during the offseason.

But in Round 4? Come on.
