49ers’ character equivalents on HBO’s Game of Thrones
By Peter Panacy
Jimmy Garoppolo as Jaime Lannister
The 49ers’ franchise quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, doesn’t have the reputation of being a king slayer.
Although he was a chief subject of all those apparent rifts with the New England Patriots, quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick in what could be seen as the equivalent to the ruling Lannister family.
Evil empires aside, Garoppolo’s direct Game of Thrones comparison is one of those from the Lannisters, Jaime Lannister, who carried the proverbial “keys to the kingdom” as a member of the King’s Guard, only to be sent packing to make room for the houses of power at King’s Landing.
Or Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, whichever you prefer.
And to build on some speculation, our friends over at FanSided’s Winter Is Coming site pointed out how Lannister donned northern armor in Season 8’s previews.
Shifting allegiances, perhaps? That was the case for Garoppolo.
Like Jaime Lannister, who lost his dominant hand and was forced to undergo an epic comeback, Garoppolo will have to prove again he can be a dominant quarterback under center after suffering a debilitating ACL tear early in 2018. Both injuries figure to be pivotal storylines in both the GoT and 49ers’ sagas.
Oh, and they’re both handsome devils, aren’t they?
