San Francisco 49ers 2019 NFL Draft mock with Nick Bosa

Unfortunately, the word is out on University of Maryland safety Darnell Savage. Prior to his strong showing at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, I projected Savage as a potential fourth-round steal for the safety-hungry 49ers.

In just 4.36 seconds, Savage made it extremely likely that his name will be called before the third day of the draft:

In addition to the 40-yard dash, the speedster excelled in the majority of the events at the combine, and proved to be taller than his listed height at Maryland.

Since his impressive workout, Savage’s draft stock has continued to rise. Over the past week, Savage has been slated as San Francisco’s third-round selection in multiple mock drafts, including the latest three-round mock draft by Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller.

Yesterday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic even made Savage his annual 49ers Draft Crush.

Savage is a ball hawk and a willing tackler, despite his relative lack of size and length. Due to his speed and versatility, the Terps used him in a variety of roles on defense, including the single-high safety role he would likely play for San Francisco. During his final two college seasons, no matter where he lined up, Savage made the types of plays —  seven interceptions, a blocked punt and three touchdowns — the 49ers have lacked in recent seasons.
