No. 2: Nick Mullens a serious contender for backup quarterback

As the season comes to a close, it’s hard not to see quarterback Nick Mullens as the backup in 2019, taking away the No. 2 job from C.J. Beathard. He continues to play at a great standard for someone with such limited game experience.

Mullens again put out reasonable numbers, completing 20 passes from 29 attempts for 275 yards and one touchdown. He had a completion rate of 69 percent and a passer rating of 110.6. Mullens also targeted nine different receivers throughout the course of the game.

He again showed confidence and poise in the pocket. The Seahawks brought the pass rush late in the game, with Mullens taking several big hits due to overwhelming pressure against the offensive line. He was sacked three times for a total loss of 18 yards. However, he maintained good ball security under pressure.

Mullens’ best throw of the game would come in the fourth quarter, throwing a dime to Dante Pettis in the pouring rain for a 30-yard reception which would set up a field goal by kicker Robbie Gould.

With two games of the regular season remaining, Mullens will have two more opportunities to showcase his skills to both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch as to why he should be the backup to starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in 2019.
