No. 1: Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars

Like Andy Dalton, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Blake Bortles is another one of those quarterbacks who seemingly avoids the NFL hot seat on a year-to-year basis.

Unlike Dalton, though, Bortles isn’t playing well this season. At all.

Here are some fun numbers for you. Bortles’ 81.4 passer rating ranks lower than that of C.J. Beathard, which is saying something as the Niners have far fewer offensive weapons for support. And Bortles’ 60.3 completion percentage is also a tenth of a point lower than Beathard’s number too.

So, after going 6-of-12 against the Houston Texans for 61 yards, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone elected to throw in Bortles’ backup, Cody Kessler, who ended up completing 70 percent of his passes that game.

“I just literally did it to try to get a damn spark from this football team to put everyone on notice that they have to focus and they have to go out there and play better,” Marrone told the media following the switch, per NFL.com’s Nick Shook. “At points in the second half they did that. That’s not fair to the quarterback but that’s the way this business is.”

Yes, that is how this business works.

Jacksonville’s window to win a Super Bowl is open right now. Bortles is a massive piece holding the team back from reaching that goal. Sure, he’s due a good chunk of money the next two seasons. But teams on the cusp of deep playoff runs shouldn’t worry too much about the contractual obligations.

They need to worry about putting the best talent on the field regardless of contracts, meaning Bortles is red hot on the NFL hot seat.
