No. 1: Running Back Joe Williams

Oh, how the Joe Williams hype train has fallen.

Just a year after then-rookie Williams was hyped up to be the running back of the future for the 49ers, the ex-Utah running back now looks like one of the worst running backs on the roster.

More from SF 49ers News

There’s just no burst that Williams plays with. His vision is mediocre, looks slow and sluggish on the field. Fellow second-year running back Jeremy McNichols is clearly outplaying him and may steal a spot on the roster. Alfred Morris still has some gas in him and Raheem Mostert has all but locked up his roster spot with his versatility as a core special-teams player.

To put the cherry on top, Williams suffered a rib fracture that is going to hold him out for the rest of preseason. He won’t get any more chances to prove himself to the coaches. When he gets cut, he better hope that a team takes a flier on him because the league is always moving forward.

Nobody cares about if you used to be all hyped up. They just care about what kind of player you are now.

It’s time to say goodbye to the Williams hype train. It was fun while it lasted.
