No. 5: Running back Bo Scarbrough

Age: 21 years old

Height: 6 feet 2 inches

Weight: 235 pounds

Out of Alabama, running back Bo Scarbrough brings something to the table that San Francisco does not currently possess — size in the backfield.

Yes, the 49ers just signed running back Jerick McKinnon to a lucrative deal in free agency. But McKinnon is five inches shorter than Scarbrough and weighs 19 pounds less.

Scarbrough was never quite the workhorse that Derrick Henry was at Alabama. That’s fine though, because San Francisco already has McKinnon and second-year player Matt Breida slotted atop the depth chart.

With those two ahead of him, Scarbrough won’t need to pound out 20 carries a game. The addition of Scarbrough would bring a formidable “thunder and lighting” dynamic to the 49ers, with McKinnon’s agility and Scarbrough’s bruising running style.

The power running back would ideally be used in goal line and short yardage situations, considering his physique. Even so, Scarbrough has shown to be elusive in his running.

It should also be noted that Scarbrough had the fifth highest SPARQ score (134.5) among draft-eligible running backs. SPARQ is an acronym for speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness, and is used to “measure sport-specific athleticism.”

Pro Football Focus has Scarbrough ranked as the No. 19 back in this year’s draft class, while NFLDraftScout.com (run by Dane Brugler) projects Scrabrough as a fifth-round pick.
