No. 3: Derwin James, Safety, Florida State

I have nothing but good to say about Derwin James, a dynamic safety who should project to be a great pro.

But I’ve seen him mocked to the 49ers, and I can’t help but think why this is.

James is a great talent and could possibly start for the 49ers in Week 1. However the team is pretty set at safety with Jaquiski Tartt, Adrian Colbert, Jimmie Ward and, depending what happens in free agency, Eric Reid all fighting for snaps there and all doing well when they did.

Reid, a former first-round pick and Pro Bowler, may have been forced out, unless he’s re-signed and moves to linebacker. That’s how good the crop of safeties are.

I love James, but the Niners do not need to add someone to a talented safety group in the first round.
