San Francisco 49ers: 5 worst free-agent signings in franchise history
No. 1: Quarterback Brian Hoyer
Brian Hoyer took over the starting quarterback job in the beginning of the 2017 regular season. While some fans hoped Hoyer would be the answer to the 49ers’ issues on offense, that was never the case.
Hoyer signed a two-year deal worth $12 million with San Francisco in 2017. The 49ers’ front office expected the veteran to, at least, hold the fort until the team got its franchise quarterback, but Hoyer was more than below average during the first few games of the season.

Even though he led the team in close games, Hoyer still contributed to the team’s winless start.
During his six starts in San Francisco, Hoyer never won a game and only threw for four touchdowns. Hoyer also only completed 58 percent of his passes and threw four interceptions.
Although, one of Hoyer’s best performances was in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams, despite throwing a pick to start the game:
Backup quarterback C.J. Beathard replaced Hoyer in Week 6, but the 49ers still could not find success until Jimmy Garoppolo’s arrival. San Francisco released Hoyer after trading for Garoppolo in October.

The 49ers may have went through a tough patch with Hoyer as the starting quarterback. However, now with Garoppolo as the franchise QB, things are looking much brighter in San Francisco.
