San Francisco 49ers: Ranking 5 best individual Super Bowl performances in franchise history
No. 3: Joe Montana (Super Bowl XXIV)
Heading into Super Bowl XXIV, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the quarterback duel between Montana and then-Denver Broncos QB John Elway.
The two Hall of Famers were expected to have a shootout, but things did not go Elway’s way. Montana outperformed Elway, throwing five touchdowns and passing for 297 yards.
Three of those touchdowns were thrown to Montana’s go-to receiver, Rice, who went on to total 149 receiving yards as well.
Montana’s incredible performance earned him the Super Bowl MVP award and led the 49ers to their fourth title in franchise history. This Super Bowl victory was also Montana’s last, which makes it extra special.
NFL.com ranked Montana’s Super Bowl XXIV performance as sixth best in history.
Montana’s five scores also broke an NFL record for most touchdowns in a Super Bowl. However, that same record gets broken five years later.
