49ers: The good, bad and ugly from Week 16 win over Jaguars
The ugly
Onside kick unit
This section is especially short, because, really, there was very little ugly from the 49ers for this game. Putting up 44 points on the NFL’s No. 1 defense is quite the feat.
But there was one moment in particular that nearly cost San Francisco the win. After scoring a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to make it 37-27 with only 2:13 left in the game, the Jaguars attempted an onside kick.
That too was successful for Jacksonville, and it should have never happened. The ball was fielded terribly by the “good hands team” (the name sometimes reserved for onside kick units).
Granted, the kick was a spectacular one from the Jaguars. But still, this is a play that needs to be executed perfectly. It is practiced over and over again; there really is no room for excuse.
It set Jacksonville up nicely, who only needed 23 seconds to score a touchdown to bring the score to 37-33. Fortunately for the 49ers, it was too little, too late.
