49ers vs. Redskins: Full Week 6 preview for San Francisco
Quarterback comparison
Brian Hoyer had an excellent Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts. Can he repeat it?
Through his play this season, Hoyer has played exactly like what he was signed as: a stop-gap quarterback. There have been a few good games, but the consistency is the biggest thing lacking in Hoyer’s game.
He’s shown that he’s clearly not the answer to the 49ers quarterbacking woes, but I don’t think anybody ever considered Hoyer the solution. He does have two 300-yard plus passing games, but also one game with less than 100 passing yards and one game with a 48.9% completion percentage. That reeks of unevenness.
Kirk Cousins playing some exceptional football as of late.
Quite honestly, Cousins has been able to effectively pass the ball this season. He already has a NFC Offensive Player of the Week award under his belt, earning it in Week 3 when he was 25-30 passing for 365 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Cousins registered a 150.7 passer rating for the game.
And while Hoyer himself has been fantastic on play-action this season, which is something I discuss later in this article, Cousins has outperformed anybody else in the NFL.
Safe to say Cousins is playing like a top-10 quarterback this season.
