Quarterback comparison

It was another horrendous game for Brian Hoyer in Week 4, and the hot seat is starting to warm up.

There’s just no dancing around it — Hoyer has not been good this season. Hoyer is 29th out of 31 quarterbacks for yards per attempt with 5.8, and his 78.2 PFF quarterback rating is No. 27 in the league.

It gets worse when you consider the offensive line play — tackles Joe Staley and Trent Brown have both played fantastic football in 2017 and have consistently graded out highly for PFF through four games. And as it stands, Hoyer has faced no pressure 65.6% of the time, which is good for No. 14 in the NFL.

How much longer before Kyle Shanahan starts to seriously ponder the idea of rookie C.J. Beathard? A few more performances like the one Hoyer had in Arizona and the answer is soon.

For newly-acquired Jacoby Brissett, it’s been unsteady.

Brought in as a fill-in for Andrew Luck, who’s still nursing a right shoulder injury, Brissett has been up and down for the Colts. Although he leads in the team in touchdowns with four total, it’s been mainly down for Brissett.

Brissett is completing 59.1% of his passes and has thrown for 683 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The team is 1-3, yet only remains one game out of first place in the AFC South.

Luck practiced for the first time this week since undergoing shoulder surgery in January. The timetable for his return is uncertain, but it looks to be coming up in the next few weeks.
