Week 5 by the numbers

Through four games played this season, there have been two standout players for San Francisco. One of them was already mentioned, with Carlos Hyde.

Currently, Hyde is No. 6 in rushing yards (321). And he’s doing it efficiently too, averaging 4.9 yards a carry. That’s good for No. 8 in the league — of those in the top 10 for yards per carry, Hyde is one of only two players with 65 or more carries (Kareem Hunt). This highlights his consistency this year so far.

Hyde is second in the league for most 15+ yards run with five, right behind Hunt’s seven. The 40.1 elusive rating (Pro Football Focus) Hyde has put up is No. 14 in the NFL, sandwiched between Jacksonville’s Leonard Fournette and Buffalo’s LeSean McCoy.

On the flip side of the ball for the 49ers, defensive lineman DeForest Buckner is playing at a top-notch level. I’ll begin with this:

Rushing the passer, Buckner has been a disruptive force. His sack total is relatively low, with only one so far.

It’s in the other areas as a pass rusher where Buckner has made his mark:

  • Nine quarterback hits
  • Thirteen hurries
  • Twenty-three total pressures

All of that on 131 pass-rushing snaps, which is why PFF has Buckner No. 1 for interior defenders in pass-rushing productivity (13.4) and is the highest graded defensive lineman. And Buckner hasn’t lacked with his rush defense either, ranking No. 13 in PFF’s run stop percentage (10.1) for interior defenders.

Buckner’s play also warranted a nod to the PFF First-Quarter All-Pro team.
