Quarterback Brian Hoyer

Trent Brown and the Niners offensive line did an amicable job protecting quarterback Brian Hoyer against a strong Seattle defense.

But San Francisco’s quarterback didn’t do his offense any favors in Week 2, amassing a mere 99 passing yards and finishing the day with a lowly 48.2 passer rating.

Hoyer also tossed a first-half interception right into the waiting hands of Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner — a play eerily similar to the pick Hoyer threw to Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly the week before.

Worse yet, Hoyer almost made the same mistake twice, only Wagner dropped what would have been a second pick of the game.

“I have to play a whole lot better,” Hoyer said later, via Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News. “I’m disappointed with myself.”

Indeed, Hoyer’s play is a major reason the Niners have yet to score a touchdown over two games into 2017. Inaccuracy and some poor decision-making within the pocket has plagued San Francisco’s offense.

It’s way too soon for head coach Kyle Shanahan to call upon his rookie quarterback, C.J. Beathard, to take over for Hoyer. But the fact this notion is even being discussed isn’t a good look for San Francisco’s veteran QB.
