Quarterback: Steve Young

Season: 1998

Former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia actually holds the franchise’s record for most passing yards in a season (4,278 in 2000), but Hall of Famer Steve Young’s 1998 campaign is just behind him.

That year, Young threw for an astounding 4,170 yards — a career high — and a league-leading 36 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions.

More from Niner Noise

Oh, and Young rushed for 454 yards and six touchdowns that year too.

Take that into account with the ESPN fantasy scoring system we discussed. Young’s passing numbers alone would have netted 286.8 points. But tack on his running game, and you get an additional 81.4 points.

That’s a total of 368.2 fantasy points over the entire season.

Comparatively, the NFL MVP last season, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, had 355 fantasy points in 2016.

Yeah, Young’s 1998 season was that good.

Some might think a year from fellow 49ers Hall of Famer, Joe Montana, should be on this list. Well, Montana never reached the coveted 4,000-yards-passing plateau over his storied career and had a career-best 31 touchdowns thrown in 1987.

So, yes, Young gets the nod here.

It’s OK, Joe. You can hang onto the fact you never tossed an interception in any of your Super Bowl appearances.
