By Peter Panacy
The San Francisco 49ers recently announced their schedule for 2017 offseason events and important dates. Niner Noise breaks it down.
The NFL is a year-round spectacle, which is probably a main reason why you’re still interested in what’s going on with the San Francisco 49ers in early spring.
And the latest has San Francisco’s official offseason schedule, released via the team’s website on Monday.
Here’s the breakdown of offseason scheduled events:
San Francisco 49ers
"First Day of Offseason Workouts: April 10Phase 1: April 10-13, April 18-21Phase 2: May 1-4, May 8-11, May 16-18OTAs: May 22-23, May 25, May 30-31, June 2, June 5-6, June 8-9MinicampsVoluntary Minicamp: April 25-27Rookie Minicamp: May 5-7Mandatory Minicamp: June 13-15"
Rules for offseason workouts and minicamps are governed by the league’s collective bargaining agreement, which reads:
"Voluntary offseason workout programs are intended to provide training, teaching and physical conditioning for players. As per Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each club’s official, voluntary nine-week offseason program is conducted in three phases:Phase One consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.Phase Two consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.Article 22 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates that clubs may hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players. This minicamp must occur during Phase Three of the offseason program.New head coaches are entitled to conduct an additional voluntary veteran minicamp. Any voluntary minicamp for veteran players must be conducted prior to the NFL Draft (April 27-29), but no earlier than week three of the club’s offseason workout program and after at least one week of the two weeks of Phase One activities that the clubs may hold pursuant to Article 21.Each club may hold a rookie football development program for a period of seven weeks, which in 2017 may begin on May 15. During this period, no activities may be held on weekends, with the exception of one post-NFL Draft rookie minicamp, which may be conducted on either the first or second weekend following the draft."

The Niners could have started offseason workouts this week, as the league affords a jumpstart to teams with a new head coach in place for the season.
But according to Joe Fann of 49ers.com, head coach Kyle Shanahan elected not to do this, preferring to give his coaching staff an extra week of prep time before actually working with the players themselves.
Of course there is a big event coming up at the end of the month — the 2017 NFL Draft.
The draft starts on Thursday, April 27 with Round 1 taking the entire evening. Rounds 2 and 3 are held on Friday, April 28, and the remaining four rounds wrap up the draft on Saturday, April 29.
