Davis Webb, California

Sometimes it’s just bad timing. The year the 49ers have a top-five pick and desperately need a QB, there doesn’t seem to be a clear-cut franchise guy at the position.

More from SF 49ers Draft

Opinions vary on whether the top prospect at QB is UNC’s Mitchell Trubisky, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, or Deshone Kizer from Notre Dame.

If the Niners pass on a QB in the first round, the next six rounds carry prospects of all shapes and sizes.

Enter Davis Webb, Cal’s starter this past season.

Webb operated in the same offense that last year’s second overall pick Jared Goff ran. And there is the issue.
Many experts feel Webb will struggle moving from a spread, “bear raid” offense to a pro-style system.

But there is also plenty to like about Webb, especially as a developmental QB.
Webb has the size (6-foot-5, 230 pounds), arm strength and accuracy scouts look for in evaluating the position.

And his stats bare that out. His 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns and 12 picks, to go along with a 61 percent completion percentage in the PAC-12, give head coach Kyle Shanahan some things to work with.

He could be selected by a team in the late first round. But if he were to fall into the late second round or beyond, the Niners may make a move to get this solid prospect.
