Blaine Gabbert Starts, but How Will He Compare to Colin Kapernick?

The 49ers have not officially listed either quarterback Colin Kaepernick or Blaine Gabbert as the team’s No. 1 starter in the regular season. Not yet, at least.

Just take a look at the unofficial depth chart, courtesy of Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area:

Kaepernick is dealing with arm problems this week and, according to head coach Chip Kelly (h/t John McClain of the Houston Chronicle), will give way to Gabbert starting versus Houston.

Kelly did note Kaepernick will get some snaps.

This is another setback for Kaepernick but, if he outshines Gabbert in limited action, the performance will go a long way in ensuring the competition remains open. For now, all signs point to the 49ers literally trying to hand the starting gig to Gabbert.

A guess would be Gabbert sees two offensive drives and Kaepernick gets the next series.

Each quarterback’s respective performances will be very influential in Kelly’s decision, although a private decision may have already been made by this point.

Regardless, San Francisco’s quarterback battle will retain the vast majority of attention this preseason.

It’s worth watching.
