2016 NFL Draft: Round-by-Round Mock for 49ers
Round 6, Pick 213: Elijah Shumate, S, Notre Dame
Shumate is a pure box safety—he’s not going to be asked to do much coverage in the NFL, or else he’ll quickly find himself out of the league. He’s very physical, firing into tackles and closing down plays that try to bounce to the outside. In the NFL, he’s going to have to get things done on special teams to earn a roster slot.
Is this a perfect draft? No, of course not. There are plenty of things to critique, with the primary concern being not addressing the offensive line until the third day of the draft. Considering the 49ers’ many needs, and the needs of the teams around them, however, this would be a very good draft, bringing with it plenty of potential and talent at key areas. It’s the foundation for a rebuild of the 49ers, who bottomed out last year under Jim Tomsula. Here’s hoping the first draft of the Chip Kelly regime gets things back on track.
