The San Francisco 49ers may have a dozen picks in this year’s draft.  Here’s how they could use them.

The 2016 NFL Draft is fewer than 75 days away, and the San Francisco 49ers will load up on talent that weekend.

The 49ers have eight draft picks already assigned, plus a possible four more compensatory picks yet to be assigned, according to Over the Cap’s projections. That’s a lot of draft capital to move around and target the players they desire.

Sitting before the start of free agency, it’s difficult to predict exactly what each team will need on draft day. Free agents will be re-signed or change teams, franchise tags will be assigned and some players may opt to retire altogether. San Francisco fans know quite well how quickly a roster can change from surprise retirements from the bloodbath that swept through the roster last season.

I’m making some assumptions for this mock, so it’s worth explaining those up front. First of all, we simply do not know whether Colin Kaepernick can regain the form that made him a star in 2012 and 2013, or even if he will be on the roster come draft day. Until we get more clarity on his situation with the team, I’m operating under the assumption that the 49ers will draft a first-round quarterback if one of the top three are available when they are on the clock.

I’m also assuming, for the sake of argument, that trades will not occur. With 12 picks, the 49ers certainly could move up and down the draft board with relative ease, and I feel that ten selections or so would be a more reasonable number of selections to fit on the final roster and practice squad.  However, mock drafts are already relying on enough assumptions as it is; adding potential trades adds an extra layer of uncertainty and specificity which isn’t particularly useful.

With no further ado, with the seventh pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select…
