The San Francisco 49ers have been quiet in free agency thus far. Before the 2016 NFL Draft, general manager Trent Baalke should target free agents that still offer the team something in 2016.

The San Francisco 49ers haven’t made many moves in free agency this year. They rarely do. Despite the large salary cap space available to general manager Trent Baalke, he’s shown that he prefers to buy low and late. In that mold, the 49ers are perpetually searching the free-agent bargain bins in an effort to determine who is available just before the draft.

Fortunately, although Baalke and the 49ers have made it clear they’re rebuilding this team through the 2016 NFL Draft, there are still free agents on the market that could offer the team something next season.

Niner Noise writer Rob Lowder recently detailed what Trent Baalke’s priority list should look like for the upcoming draft.

While Rob was particularly examining the draft, his list of priorities generate an excellent blueprint for Baalke and his team moving forward in the free agency market as well.

Many of the incoming free agents will play positions that seem “settled” as the team approaches the 2016 NFL Draft. In reality, very few positions on this team are settled and competition at every roster spot only improves the overall quality moving forward.

Once the team knows their needs, Baalke can begin searching the scrap heap for some decent players.

Then it all comes down to the money. The 49ers have plenty of it and they’ll likely have to spend if they anticipate convincing anyone to come to town.

Remember, some of the names that are still available aren’t pretty. If someone is still a free agent, it’s because they bring a little baggage along with them. But this team isn’t in much of a position to complain about these types of players right now. They need guys that can suit up and help shuffle rookies along for the next two or three years while the majority of the roster is turned over.

In no particular order, here are five free agents that are still available and could help the 49ers in 2016. Notice I didn’t say that they would necessarily contribute on the field. Don’t shoot the messenger, folks.
