Week 6 NFL power rankings has 49ers looking at a surprise top 5 contender

The 49ers have somehow come out of a five- week stretch including the Rams, Broncos and Seahawks to come out perfect on the other side.

In what was one of the most epic wins of the Kyle Shanahan era, the San Francisco 49ers matched into Seattle and inflicted some revenge on the Seahawks in a 32-29 epic. It was one of a few incredible games this week.

The San Francisco 49ers continue to bask in the numerous praises coming their way from every direction, with a 32-29 upset win in Seattle the latest scalp added to an impressive beginning to the season.

The Niners are 5-0 with three wins coming against the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos and the Seahawks.

This is not a fluke team.

We won't prattle on too much here, however. You can view the previous week below as always, and here we go!

1. San Francisco 49ers (5-0) - Last Week: 1

It feels like only injuries can stop the 49ers being a Super Bowl favorite in the NFC. The defense stood up big time, and Brock Purdy is the MVP favorite, too.

As long as the Commanders don't trip them up, the Niners should extend the winning streak.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (4-0) - Last Week: 2

It was a little surprising not to see Tyreek Hill join the Chiefs already to use the bye week to jell with the offense again. But then again, they'd probably just run up and down the field again now they have Kenneth Walker.

3. Buffalo Bills (4-1) - Last Week: 3

The pass defense continues to be a concern and perhaps the Achilles heel that stops them from another Super Bowl, but Buffalo fans must be thrilled that they didn't just get the win over the Rams but also finally got an OT win with Josh Allen.

4. Baltimore Ravens (4-1) - Last Week: 5

Tyler Huntley led the Ravens to an impressive win over the explosive Falcons, and Lamar Jackson could be back as soon as this week.

Crisis averted, and the AFC is once again at the mercy of the Chiefs, Bills and Ravens as the best teams.

5. Minnesota Vikings (5-0) - Last Week: 8

The Vikings should not be 5-0 on paper, but we have enough data that suggests, maybe, the Vikings are playing sustainable football. The defense is elite, and Kyler Murray looks at least keep the offense above water.

6. Seattle Seahawks (3-2) - Last Week: 4

Yes, the Seahawks lost, but I'm not too concerned, given they're not going to turn it over like they did every week, and the Niners are No. 1 in power rankings. They'll be fine (unfortunately for the 49ers), and I won't knock them far in the rankings. .

7. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1) - Last Week: 6

The Jaguars needed a fluke to beat the sputtering Eagles, and that's being generous. If the Eagles (more on them later) kick the ball out the back of the end zone, the Jags do not win that game.

8. New England Patriots (3-2) - Last Week: 13

The Patriots look back on track after a slippery start, and more importantly, Drake Maye is throwing the ball more like the MVP candidate we saw last year. They'll beat the Jets and get to a good 4-2 record.

9. Chicago Bears (3-2) - Last Week: 7

So much for Tyson Bagent being a competent backup QB. I'm willing ot forgive that insipid performance against the Packers, however, given Caleb Williams is going to return.

10. Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) - Last Week: 10

The game against the Dolphins wasn't as close as the box score says, as the Dolphins made it a one-score game at the very end. What does concern me, though, is the Bengals got outgained by the Dolphins, albeit with the assistance of some backdoor shenanigans.

11. Denver Broncos (3-2) - Last Week: 12

Seriously, how does Bo Nix keep turning into some weird hybrid of Joe Montana and Peyton Manning when the fourth quarter begins? He's below average the rest of the time, then turns it around. It's not even like it's a fluke, he just keeps doing it!

12. Carolina Panthers (2-2) - Last Week: 16

It says something about several other teams we will get to below that the Panthers have gone up four spots on a bye week.

The truth is this is a fun football team that looks poised to break the NFC South open.

13. Los Angeles Rams (2-3) - Last Week: 11

The Rams would be 1-4 if it wasn't for the Eagles spiraling out of control in the final quarter.

I'm not prepared to call the Horns overrated because they played the Bills tough and haven't had their full team on the field yet, but they're officially on fraud watch.

14. Detroit Lions (3-2) - Last Week: 18

We know what the Lions are now. Fun on offense, diabolically bad on defense. The Lions are the team you have a fling with before you move on to more serious teams. You're having some fun, but you know in your heart it isn't the real thing.

15. Green Bay Packers (3-2) - Last Week: 21

I'm not sure how legitimate the win over the Bears was, given Bagent self-destructed, but a divisional beatdown like that is still impressive. The reported death of the Packers may have been premature.

16. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) - Last Week: 20

I have professed to not finding the Steelers a fun football team and that they're doomed to finish around 9-8, and maybe make the playoffs before getting demolished in their first game.

I will give them credi, though. Aaron Rodgers and Co. are not going to go quietly into that good night.

17. Indianapolis Colts (2-3) - Last Week: 14

What was that?

I'm not going to jump off their bandwagon yet, though. I'm gonna chalk it up to the overseas travel (if the Rams can live off that excuse for a month, so can the Colts) and back them to get it right against the Titans.

18. New York Giants (3-1-1) - Last Week: 23

It took the Commanders blowing the game in a way that simply boggles the mind, but the Giants fought back. And that's what I like about this team, despite everything they just absolutely refuse to die wondering.

The NFC East is there for the taking, this fairytale is not impossible.

19. Atlanta Falcons (2-3) - Last Week: 15

The loss was fine. there's no shame in losing to the Ravens in overtime. The reason the Falcons have moved down, however, is Michael Penix Jr. is injured again. His health is currently uncertain, but they need him if they want any chance of winning the division.

20. Las Vegas Raiders (3-2) - Last Week: 9

I took a swing on the Raiders being a top-10 team after coming close against the Chiefs, but the Patriots took them down to earth quickly.

The Raiders have a brutal schedule, unfortunately, but maybe they could play the Bills tough, given Buffalo will be on short rest and coming off an overtime spectacular.

21. Houston Texans (1-4) - Last Week: 22

The Texans stock I "purchased" in Week 2 gained some points this week! Beating the Titans is nothing impressive, admittedly, but they did pummel them at least.

22. Dallas Cowboys (2-3) - Last Week: 17

I said last week that Dallas was a little overhyped, but I can't even say that now. Nobody is hyping the Cowboys after that completely embarrassing performance against the Buccaneers.

23. Cleveland Browns (3-2) - Last Week: 19

Cleveland simply did not look anywhere close to the team that beat the Steelers the week before. Losing to the Jets was horrific, given the Browns could have jumped to 4-1 in the AFC.

24. New York Jets (2-3) - Last Week: 27

We saw the Jets going in the right direction this week against the Browns. This is still not a good team, and I think the Browns would beat them in a rematch, hence why they're still lower, but their improvement is good to see.

25. New Orleans Saints (1-4) - Last Week: 25

Look, maybe the Vikings are just good. I don't know. Tyler Shough won't be the last quarterback Brian Flores completely obliterates.

But if they want any chance of making a run in the division, the Saints have to beat the Giants.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-4) - Last Week: 29

Jalon Daniels looked impeccable in the upset over the Cowboys, which shows what a week of preparation can do for a quarterback. The Steelers are not an impossible matchup for Tampa Bay, but the question is what can Daniels do against a competent defense?

27. Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) - Last Week: 24

On the one hand, you could argue the loss was because of bad coaching and a fluke return against an excellent team, but then I would point out they lost the yardage battle by about 200 yards, and the Jaguars were sleeping all game.

The Eagles are simply not good at anything.

28. Washington Commanders (1-3-1) - Last Week: 28

I thought Dan Quinn would be fired by the time I wrote this rankings, but he's surviving for now. This was a complete embarrassment of a performance. Now, granted, some of that is on Jayden Daniels as much as anything, by my word the ax had to fall on somebody.

29. Arizona Cardinals (1-4) - Last Week: 26

The win against the Chargers seems so long ago, and a lot more impressive back then, too. The Cardinals aren't a good team, but then again, we expected that.

Expect them to be completely demolished by a Rams team desperate to get themselves tuned up.

30. Los Angeles Chargers (0-4) - Last Week: 30

I could make a flippant comment, but considering the Chargers' receiving corps and offensive line is completely banged up, due to injury, I don't feel like literally adding insult to it this week.

31. Miami Dolphins (0-5) - Last Week: 32

Malik Willis made things interesting at the end. But he and the Dolphins have a long, long way to go from being interesting to competitive.

32. Tennessee Titans (0-5) - Last Week: 31

The final entry almost says more about Miami than it does Tennessee. The Dolphins are trying, people. They know they're horrible and they're designed to be, but they're actually getting decently competitive.

For that reason, I'm giving the Titans the bottom spot.
